Following are some guidelines for our workday life in the cubicle world:Give Cube Mates a sense of control over their own space:  Knock on cube walls before speaking, even if they are only the symbolic foam partitions.  Ask permission to enter.  Avoid hovering if they’re on the phone.  “Don, we’re in close quarters, but would you mind giving me privacy when I’m on the phone? Thanks.”Respect time and space, a.k.a. NO loitering:  Avoid conversation free-floating among people who are trying to make phone calls, read or write important documents and concentrate on their work.  Distractions can cause tremendous frustration to those who need quiet while working.  “Mary, I’m working on something right now that demands my full concentration. Thanks.”Odors know no boundaries.  What smells good to you can turn someone else’s stomach. If you eat at your desk, take the empty containers to the trash immediately. Other annoyances that can bring on grievances are: shoes (keep them ON, please);  strong perfume (sneeze, wheeze…my sinuses just went shut); or other things that are pleasing to us but not so tolerable for the cube mates.Be more aware of what you say and how loud you are.  Personal tiffs, weird bodily functions, clipping or tapping nails, gum popping, the radio, and particularly loud phone conversations, carry over cubicle walls with a much greater noise level than we think.  Assume everyone within a four-cube radius can hear you so always avoid shouting over walls for any reason.  Take sensitive matters to a closed-door room.  Also, vibrating cell phones on your desk can jump around and be very disturbing (that includes in meetings and at meals as well). Can you alternate lunch hours with those around you to have some quiet time?Avoid “Prairie Dogging”.  Heads popping up over cube wallsis greatly frowned upon by those who need the privacy and respect of working in their own space uninterrupted.  “Bob, I know it’s easiest for you to talk over the wall, but would you do me a favor and come around? Thanks”Home Sweet Home (uh, Cube):  Tastefully “framed” photos, nice plants, a small Persian rug, and meaningful knickknacks can show class. Everything gives an impression to others. What are yours?

13 jplist-folder-All-Posts-211 jplist-folder-All-Posts-211 jplist-folder-Blog-212 Blog 0 5172 5172 Your attitude as you listen, respond and interact with others is always more important, and more obvious, than anything that you say or do.  Respect, charisma, professional polish, and manners will carry you a far greater distance than anything else!Try this quick self-assessment:Check your appearance and mood before leaving home. Ensure whatever frustrations you may have encountered earlier (spilled milk, crabby spouse, a new mural in crayon on the wall) don’t show up in your facial expressions or body language and project a different message than you intended.Always be aware of the tone being set. The first few seconds will set the tone for the rest of the meeting, whether friendly, defensive, aggressive, interested and caring, ready to do business, etc. Your goal is to positively grab their attention and “keep” it.Step back and hear yourself. Would you want to listen to you? This includes clear speech (no mumbling or uncertainty), a firm yet warm and engaging tone, confidence, and truly believing in what you’re saying. We can tell when someone is sincere.Watch and compare verbal & non-verbal signals. If someone says something positive while flashing an annoyed glare accompanied by stiff body language, the message will definitely come off as insincere or untruthful. Non-verbal signals are the most honest form of communication.  For greater credibility, the face, body and words need to be consistent.Force yourself to stand tall, walk with authority, look others in the eye and speak up. Why? Because the most important thing a person can wear is confidence! If you’re nervous, you may need to speak more slowly and lower your pitch (especially if you’re a woman) and maintain control of your hands.Remember:  Winston Churchill was a self-made speaker.  He was 5/5” tall, stuttered, lisped and had little college education.  He was so terrified of public speaking that he passed out while delivering a speech to the House of Commons.  However, he practiced his speeches for four hours and became a great orator and statesman! Learn what you need to go forward in your life and practice, practice, practice.Remember…you are awesome!!

19 jplist-folder-All-Posts-211 jplist-folder-All-Posts-211 Article-Article 0 4166 4166 ↵I once read an article about knocking down barriers that keep us from reaching our goals. It is amazing how much two fish can tell us about our own human nature. In the study, a barracuda and a mackerel were put in a glass tank with a clear glass partition placed between them. For two days the barracuda kept banging its little fish head against that nasty wall to get to its favorite meal, the mackerel. On the third day, researchers noticed the barracuda had given up. At that point, they removed the glass partition so the barracuda had full access to its long-awaited feast. What do you think it did? Nothing! Never tried again! Why? Because in its little fish brain, the goal was out of reach, so it just gave up. Unfortunately, the prize was right there for the taking but it had already given up hope and swam away. ↵How many times do we allow obstacles in our lives to continue blocking our success? How many times do we look for reasons something can’t be done (too old, lack of education, messed up family, no money)? WE often limit ourselves more than circumstances limit us from developing our ambitions into realities. When discouragement tells you to take a seat, tell it to get lost and start your faith workout. Turn your focus to real life situations that will inspire you back into action. Think of the homeless girl who made it into Harvard. Remember Susan Boyle who stepped out of her comfort zone and onto a stage where she was met with sneers and rolling eyes. She mustered up all the strength within her and totally blew them away with her voice. Her dream was too strong to stuff away any longer. What about the armless guitar player who blesses everyone who hears him play beautifully with his toes. There are countless cases of those who will not stop kicking against that obstacle until it shatters into a million pieces and they finally win the gold.↵↵Bottom line, don’t let your talents stay buried in the ground. Nurture them daily. Put spikes of determination and faith on your boots and keep kicking down those partitions until they fall before you. One more whack against the glass may be all it takes to conquering your goal, and getting your own mackerel!! Boots on, leg up, start kicking!!!!↵
